Gold eyeglass frames have always been expensive and therefore only a limited number were produced. The earliest pair I have in my collection dates to the early 1600's. Few frames from this period are ever offered for sale.
Gold eyeglasses that date between 1760 and 1830 come to the market from time to time. Gold eyeglasses that date between 1850 and 1920 are more common.
Between 1900 and 1930, many frames were made from 10k and 14k gold. Unfortunately, many of these frames were melted down after the stock market crash of 1929.

The most popular vintage eyeglass styles today are the three-piece frames. The style was produced between 1880 and 1920 without nose pads. Three-piece frames with nose pads were made from 1921 until the 1960's. Custom and designer eyeglass manufacturers still make three-piece gold eyeglasses. Most of these companies are in Europe.
