Beginning in the early 1760's, eyeglasses were made with sliding temples extensions. This style to be very popular and continued to be made for more than 100 years. Examples made before 1833 are hand made and rare. Examples made after 1833 were made by machine and because millions were produced, are readily available today. Most frames before 1833 are made from steel. A few examples in coin silver and gold do come to the market from time to time.
Pair # 1141-32 are made of steel. Benjamin Franklin had a pair exactly like this pair. Franklin marked his spectacles "B. Franklin 1773". Notice the small round end called a wig loop. Earlier wigs had strands about as wide as a man's thumb. Around 1770 the strand on wigs was reduced to about the size of a dime. By the American Revolution, the strands on a wig were about the size of a pea. One can use wig loop size as an aid in dating spectacles made in the 1700's.
Size: 4 1/2 inches, Temple arms are 5 3/4 inches long. Excellent condition.
